            KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

bulletST. PATRICKS DAY DINNER
The Knights of Columbus will be holding their annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner on Saturday, March 13, 2010 in Doheny Hall.  We will have Celtic Dancers and Irish Singers.  Tickets will be on sale February 27 & 28 and March 6 & 7 in the vestibule of the church.  They can also be obtained during the week in the Parish Office.  Ticket prices:  Adults $16, children 12 and under: $7, families, $45.  This is a very popular event and has been sold out in the past.  Please plan to get your tickets early.  Contact Joe Van Zant 722-3063 if you have any questions.

bulletST MEL'S RETREAT MARCH 26-28
Please join your fellow parishioners at Christ the King Retreat Center.  If you are a first-timer you will be warmly welcomed.  Many are surprised to find such a place of quiet serenity nestled in suburban Sacramento.  You'll be invited to make yourself at home by friendly staff and volunteers and you'll be directed toward a comfortable room with private bath.  You'll be served tasty meals and you won't have to do dishes.  You will meet wonderful people making the retreat with you and have the chance to be with them in both conversation and solitude.  Please join us.  Call Lloyd, 961-9339, or Bill 638-3162 for further information and to register.

Prayer vigils are continuing in both Placer and Sacramento counties.  Please join in this peaceful prayer and public sitness, endorsed by Bishop Jaime Soto, asking god for the conversion of people contemplating abortion.  For Placer County details call Gloria Burgett, 966-2230 and for Sacramento County call Julian Woodruff, 451-2402.

If you are a Catholic who has been away from the Church for a while, this invitation is for you.  No matter how long you have been away and no matter what reason, we invite you to consider renewing your relationship with the Catholic Church.  Please join us for informal listening sessions and an update of the Catholic faith facilitated by former non-practicing Catholics.  No strings attached!  St. Mel Parish will hold Catholics Come Home on six consecutive Tuesday evenings at 7:30PM beginning January 5, 2010.  For more information, call Stephanie or Paul Duncan 967-8461.

Please contact U.S. Senators and ask them to:
bulletRemove abortion funding from the health care bill being debated in the Senate.
bulletInsert adequate conscience protection clauses in the bill so people will not be forced to participate in objectionable medical practices.
Whom to contact:  At the CFO website:  www.cfl-sacramento.org you will find a list of all U.S. Senators.  Those whose votes are most critical are shown in white.  You will also find other useful information there, like statements from the USCCB saying this is the "worst bill" of all the bills discussed, and that there is "no way a Catholic Politician can support it".

bulletPILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES, FATIMA AND SPAIN
Join like-minded Catholics as we venerate the relics of St. James the Apostle and St. Teresa of Avila and journey to Lourdes, Fatima, Lisbon, Santiago de Compostela, Avila, Madrid, Saragossa and Barcelona.  We leave from SFO June 1, 2010 and return June 14, 2010.  For more information call Karen 652-7560.

GREAT NEWS:  A new scripture study group is now forming!  This group will meet on Friday nights, 7-9PM in the Youth Ministry Room and will study James:  Pearls for a Wise Living.  This is an 11 week study presented by Jeff Cavins.  First session is February 19.  Cost is $17.  Call Dominic 539-4180 for more information and to register.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY NEWS
The Society thanks all of the generous parishioners who supported our work by placing their contributions in the poor box in the vestibule of the church.  For the month of January, your gifts allowed us to help 174 people with 34 home visits.  There were a total of 360 donated hours to help the needy.  Thank you, also, to Father McSweeney who graciously designated the Ash Wednesday collection to the Society to help with our work.  Our Annual Shred Day is coming April 17!  Old checks, bank statements, old tax records, etc.  More information to follow.

Come check us out!  We have over 300 videos, over 3000 books and 200 audio tape sets, including Scott Hahn's Bible Study program.  Come and browse our great selection of items that will help you increase your knowledge and love for our faith!  We're located behind the Perpetual Adoration Chapel and we're open after all Sunday Masses and Saturday evening Mass.

If you would like to be in the Real Presence of Jesus and visit with Him either for an Hour; or be a substitute, please call Marge Della Villa at 967-0641 or Bill Savage at 944-2584. 
Attention should be given when one makes his/her holy hour.  The Perpetual Adoration Chapel NEEDS SOMEONE PRESENT AT ALL TIMES.  The importance of calling when unable to keep assigned hour cannot be stressed enough - consideration for the adorer whose hour is finished is equally important.  PLEASE call Marge at 967-0641 or Bill at 944-2584 so a substitute can be arranged when the need arises.

A reminder to all who use the chapel:
The Chapel is a place is a place for quiet prayer for quiet prayer and to visit the Lord, conversation with other adorers should take place outside of the Chapel.  Thank you for your kind consideration.

Altar Society: 
The St. Mel Altar Society welcomes volunteers wishing to help with the care of the church.  They meet for one hour Fridays after the 8:30 AM Mass to prepare the church for weekend Masses. For more information, please call Lorraine at 967-8994 or Linda at 967-2915.
